How it works

Powertrust contracts new projects and makes sure they deliver.

Powertrust matches a buyer's purchase requirements with projects that are waiting to be built, and signs both sides. The buyer gets one counterparty and a fixed US-dollar price for 5 to 20 years; the developer gets a purchase agreement in dollars that helps the project get financed. The electricity is consumed where it is generated; the buyer receives the certificates and the data.

A 20 kW hospital rooftop is too small to buy. Two thousand of them aren't.

01

Source

Vetted developers in 23 countries (and growing) building rooftop, ground-mount and mini-grid solar from 5 kWp to 5 MWp, new-build first.

02

Contract

Powertrust signs as principal, so the buyer gets one counterparty and a fixed USD price for the term while the developer gets a purchase agreement in USD.

03

Certify

Generation data is verified through our verification stack and issued as I-RECs in the country registry.

04

Report

Per-project, per-MWh data delivered in the format CSRD, SBTi, RE100 and CDP require.

Two timelines

What happens on each side of the contract.

For the buyer

  1. Name the demand. Countries, volume in MWh a year, and the term.
  2. Powertrust sources against it. Projects in those countries, not yet built, and a fixed USD price for the term.
  3. One contract. Signed with Powertrust as principal.
  4. Projects are built and metered. Generation data flows to Powertrust and the registry.
  5. Delivery, every year of the term. Certificates retired in your name, with per-project data for your reporting.

For the developer

  1. Submit your pipeline. We review it within 10 business days.
  2. Detailed review. If the projects match buyer demand, we ask for more detail.
  3. Purchase agreement. Awarded within two months of the detailed review: fixed USD price, 5 to 20 years.
  4. Build and connect. Meter data reaches Powertrust by API or weekly upload.
  5. Paid on issuance. Each certificate is issued against verified generation and paid when issued.

Verification

Every MWh traced to a meter, a project and a country.

Powertrust forecasts and monitors the performance of every project with physics-based models of what each site should produce, given its location, size, layout and the weather. Every meter read is compared against that expectation, and against the thousands of other sites in the portfolio, before a certificate is issued. Meter data flows by API to the registry issuer, and a per-project, per-MWh audit trail goes to the buyer.

For buyers

Assurance for a class of asset that has never had the visibility of a utility-scale plant: each certificate traces to a metered site whose output was checked against a model and its peers.

For developers

The same monitoring shows when a site is under-performing, so that it can be fixed and the project earns what it was built to earn.

Verification is included in every supply contract.

Standards

Certified under the I‑REC Standard. Labelled D‑REC.

Our projects are certified to the I-REC Standard. They also carry the D-REC label, a digitally enabled mechanism for distributed projects that Powertrust co-led the creation of with South Pole through the D-REC Initiative. D-REC is not a new standard; it records that the certificate came from a distributed project with verified generation data.

The buyer dashboard

Follow every project your contract covers.

Buyers follow the performance of their projects, certificate issuance and retirements through the Powertrust portal. A short walkthrough is available on request.
